I work as a veterinarian on Vancouver Island, Canada. In the process of maintaining good health in my animal patients and battling against diseases that incur sickness and death, I have to work at multiple levels of awareness: biochemicals, (pharmaceuticals, metabolism, and nutrition), cells, organs, individuals, populations, environments, and spiritual.
Some would say that the spiritual is more emotional, both for the human owner and the animal patient, but as death draws closer, it becomes more spiritual, both for the human and the animal. While I lived in this realm of work for thirty years, the quest to solve medical challenges spilled over into questions about general living and then into an inquiry into existence.
I love to travel the world, and that has opened up different ways of being and doing, and showed multiple historic facets of how we got to where we are. I ascribe to the ancient Greek method of “observe and contemplate”, without abandoning science or God, and this resulted in short essays being gathered in corners and drawers all over our house. These were transcribed from indecipherable handwriting onto the computer, but were still just glimpses of various aspects of existence and not a conversational continuum.
With reshuffling, the book was born. In a way it gave birth to itself, for although I have one viewpoint amongst many, the observations and contemplations merely flowed through me and I offer them up as a small cog in the marvelously expanding awareness of humankind.
I’ve spent most of my life on the west coast of BC, close to the sea. My wife, Deborah, and I currently live in Nanaimo, where my veterinary hospital is located; the kids are all in their 20’s and are spreading their wings– they come and go.
Wilson the Pomeranian is the commander.
There have been many sports and adventures that have been tried over the years, and the Ducati motorcycle and the paraglider are the best toys right now.
I love to read books and can’t fathom a world where we’re not surrounded by ideas, stories, knowledge and inquiries.
